Korean War — The Forgotten

Decades after the armistice, tens of thousands of unrepatriated soldiers and remains still wait to come home.

🇰🇷 Republic of Korea
~60,000

South Korean prisoners of war never returned home — the working figure used by Korean institutions.

🇺🇸 United States

U.S. MIA in North Korea

U.S. servicemembers still classified as missing on North Korean soil.

~700
DPAA
Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency

Since the 1980s, forensic remains analysis has cumulatively identified approximately 700 additional U.S. servicemembers — a continuing effort to bring every name home.

Why we cite ~60,000

The most cited South Korean source reports about 82,000 personnel were missing or held as POWs at the armistice, of whom only 8,343 were repatriated. A simple subtraction yields over 74,000, but this is a raw figure before adjustments for KIA reclassification and duplicate counts. The working estimate of roughly 50,000–60,000, or about 60,000, is the figure we use here.
